Two men have been charged after a lengthy pursuit in the New England region last Friday.
About 6.50am, officers from the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command attempted to stop a white Ford station wagon on the Gwydir Highway, Elsmore after checks revealed it was allegedly displaying the incorrect registration plates.
When the vehicle failed to stop a pursuit was initiated with Police alleging that the pursuit reached speeds of 180km/h in a 100km/h zone and the vehicle also avoided road spikes that were deployed.
Approximately one hour later, the driver, a 26 yr old male with a 49 yr old male passenger, stopped the vehicle in a no-through road in Glen Innes; both men were arrested at the scene shortly after and taken to Glen Innes Police Station.
The younger man was charged with six offences, including use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road, police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed, unlawfully possess number plates, class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45 km/h – estimated, Never licensed person drive vehicle on road – prior offence, and use uninsured motor vehicle on road.
He was refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Bail Court, while the other man was charged with two counts of possess prohibited drug and granted conditional bail, to appear at Glen Innes Local Court tomorrow.
