Inverell Mayoral Elections Take Place Today

by | Oct 9, 2024 | Community, Politics | 0 comments

Inverell Shire’s new Council will officially meet for the first time this afternoon at the Council Chambers to elect its new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Incumbent Mayor Cr Paul Harmon has expressed his intentions to stand again for the mayor position while Kate Dight, who served as Inverell Shire’s Deputy Mayor in the last term of council, has indicated she will challenge Mr Harmon for the role of Mayor at today’s Mayoral Elections.

Cr Harmon has served as Mayor of Inverell Shire Harmon since 2012, taking over from the late Barry Johnston.

If only one Councillor is nominated for either the mayor or deputy mayor role, the Returning Officer will declare that Councillor is elected for the ensuing term but if there are two or more nominations received for both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions, Councillors will vote for their preferred nominee.

The Council meeting starts at 3pm today.
