The Inverell Highlanders finals hopes were given a slight dent after being downed by Pirates 36-15 in Tamworth on Saturday in the Central North Rugby Round 14 action.
In a close match, the Highlanders led at half time but the Pirates pulled away in the 2nd half to record a vital win to cement 3rd spot on the Central North points table.
In other weekend games, competition leaders Moree Bulls were too good for the Quirindi Lions 29-12 while Scone Brumbies upset the Gunnedah Red Devils 33-28.
The Highlanders remain in 5th position just behind the Quirindi Lions in 4th spot.
