Hunter New England Local Health District have noticed whooping cough cases are still circulating in the Health District.
Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, affects people of all ages, and can be especially serious for babies and young children who get really sick and stop breathing if they get whooping cough.
Hunter New England LHD advise the best way to protect babies against whooping cough is for mums to be vaccinated in pregnancy, and for bubs to get their vaccinations on time at 6 weeks, 4 months and 6 months of age.
They also suggest if a woman is pregnant, please talk to their midwife or doctor about getting vaccinated and encourage their family to get vaccinated as well.
If you or your kids have a cough, visit your doctor or local Aboriginal Medical Service to get tested for whooping cough and if you can’t get an appointment with your usual doctor, call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222.
