Hay Fire Being Monitored

by | Nov 7, 2025 | Agriculture, Environment, Health | 0 comments

Northern Tablelands Rural Fire Service advises they’re aware of a large hay pile on Copeton Dam Road that has been burning and smoking intermittently over the past few days.

Crews have been monitoring the situation and are working closely with the landowners to fully extinguish the fire.

They advise hay fires can be particularly difficult to put out, as the tightly packed bales trap heat and limit airflow, allowing the fire to smoulder deep inside for days or even weeks while disturbing the pile can actually introduce oxygen and cause the fire to flare up again, making careful management essential.

The RFS confirm there is no threat to surrounding properties, but smoke may be visible in the area at times and residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area if smoke is causing irritation.
