Inverell was highlighted as one of the areas in regional NSW to showcase the benefits of rural training and life in NSW for GP Registrars in a workshop held in Sydney this week.
In an article in the Inverell Times, representatives from general practices in Inverell as well Moree, Griffith, Deniliquin, and Broken Hill showcased their communities and the training opportunities at their practice at a workshop for GP registrars in Parramatta on Wednesday, with Royal Australian College of GPs Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman saying as the peak body responsible for training 90 per cent of Australia’s general practitioners, the college acknowledges the importance of GPs training in rural communities.
Dr Hoffman is also calling on the NSW Government to fund an incentive for doctors to train as specialist GPs in regional NSW, saying one of the biggest barriers to GP training is the pay discrepancy for registrars leaving hospital and going into private practice, adding an incentive payment is a simple and effective fix.
According to Dr Hoffman, this investment will get more GPs training and living across NSW, with immediate benefits for the rural communities.
