Fishing For Cod at Copeton Still Allowed Despite Season Closure

by | Sep 3, 2024 | Agriculture, Media Release | 0 comments

Despite the Murray Cod fishing season ending on Sunday, anglers can still fish for Australia’s largest freshwater fish at Copeton Dam

NSW Department of Primary industries and Regional Development’s Jim Hartwell says Murray Cod cannot be taken from inland waters from 1 September to 30 November inclusive, except in Copeton and Blowering dams.

Mr Hartwell says they’re able to maintain fishing in Copeton and Blowering dams year-round as monitoring has confirmed that almost all fish in those waters are stocked, meaning the breeding season closure would provide negligible benefit to Murray Cod in those dams.

The Murray Cod fishery is subject to a three-month closure every year to protect the number-one native sportsfish during their breeding season to help ensure future generations can enjoy the thrill of catching a Murray Cod
