Driver Sentenced for Causing Death

by | Feb 2, 2026 | Crime

A man found guilty of causing the death of a 27-year-old man in a head-on collision near Bundarra in 2023 has been sentenced to a two-year home imprisonment sentence.

In an item in the Northern daily Leader, Harvey Matthew Ovenden appeared before Judge James Bennett in Sydney’s Downing Centre last week on a charge of dangerous driving causing death.

On September 30, 2023, Mr Ovenden was driving south on Bingara Road after boating at Copeton Dam when his car drifted to the incorrect side of the road around a left-hand-bend into the path of Luke John Wells’ Toyota Hilux, causing the fatal crash.

In a victim’s statement, Mr Well’s parents, Stuart and Tracy, said Luke had saved his fiancé’s life Jaclyn, adding his final act was one of selflessness and love, he died a hero.

Ovenden was sentenced to a two-year home imprisonment sentence by way of an Intensive Corrections Order, ordered to complete 150 hours of community service and was also disqualified from driving for three years to end in September 2029.
