Country Mayors Vent Frustration Over Inland Rail Decision

by | May 11, 2026 | Local Government, Politics, Transport

NSW Country Mayors have unanimously moved a motion to push back on the Federal government’s decision not to progress with the Inland Rail project.

A meeting in Sydney on Friday, attended by several country mayors including Inverell Shire’s Kate Dight and Gwydir Shire’s Tiffany Galvin, highlighted the disappointment for all surrounding Council following last week’s decision by the Federal government to axe funding for the $45 billion Inland Rail project, revealing the project would proceed no further north than Parkes.

Mayor Dight says there has been years of economic project development on the back of this Federal project with a huge majority of line already built through to the Qld border.

She says it’s an extremely disappointing decision stressing they must do what they can to get it reversed.

Last week, Infrastructure Minister Katherine King said the Labor government had inherited Inland Rail as an “underfunded and under-planned” project that would cost three times what it was originally touted to be.
