Council to Call for Expressions of Interest from Interested Parties to Manage Inverell Mountain Bike Track

by | Mar 30, 2026 | Community, Local Government, Sport

Inverell Shire Council has resolved to temporarily close the Inverell Mountain Bike Track located on Old Bundarra Rd, following confirmation that the Inverell Mountain Bike Club is no longer operational.

Council received formal advice from the Club’s former Treasurer that the organisation is now dormant, with no active events held since November 2024 and no available volunteers to manage or maintain the facility.

As a result, the existing licence agreement between Council and the Club, which expired on 31 July 2025, has not been renewed.
At its Ordinary Meeting on 25 March 2026, Council endorsed a series of actions to ensure community safety while exploring future management options for the facility.

Mayor Cr Kate Dight said the decision was necessary given the current circumstances.
“The Mountain Bike Track has been a valued community asset, however without an active club to manage operations and maintenance, it is not feasible for Council to keep the facility open at this time,” the Mayor said.

Council resolved the following:
•Temporarily close the Mountain Bike Track and cease maintenance activities;
•Install signage to advise the public that the track is closed and entry is prohibited;
•Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from suitably qualified organisations or clubs interested in taking over management of the facility; and
•A further report to be presented to Council following the EOI process to determine the long-term future of the site.

The Mountain Bike Track, established in partnership with the Inverell Mountain Bike Club, has seen significant improvements over the years including trail development, installation of infrastructure and hosting of regional cycling events.
Council currently has no current budget allocation and is therefore not in a suitable position to assume full control of the facility at this time.

Council is encouraging community groups, sporting organisations and interested parties to consider submitting an Expression of Interest to manage the facility into the future.

Further information regarding the Expression of Interest process will be made available by Council.
