Council Tackles Water Discoloration Issue

by | Feb 3, 2026 | Local Government

Glen Innes Severn Council is committed to continuing to provide a safe and reliable water supply and currently complies with the national drinking water guidelines.

Further to issues of less than optimal water clarity, Council is continuing to treat the discoloured water issues in Glen Innes as a priority.

Our Integrated Water Services team has responded quickly when contacted by residents, and in addition to treatment actions being implemented at the Water Treatment Plant, is continuing to flush mains and has also recently had success using a new cleaning method that will also, assist in remedying the situation. Indications are that the situation is improving.

For those residents interested in the technical side, the discoloration has occurred due to conditions on the water storage elevating the level of manganese which whilst harmless in itself, after leaving the treatment plant, the manganese reacts with chlorine to cause the discoloration. The longer the water is in the main, typically in dead end sections or low volume sections, the greater the discoloration.

Residents are reminded to please contact Council directly if they are still experiencing brown or discoloured water so we can arrange a flush‑out at your property.

Logging these reports with Council is essential for tracking and resolving issues efficiently.
