After over 75 years of dedicated service, the New England Weeds Authority (NEWA) has been dissolved, with its responsibilities transitioning to Uralla Shire Council effective 15 June 2025. Established in 1947 as the New England Tablelands (Noxious Plants) County Council, NEWA was among the first single-purpose county councils in New South Wales, focusing on the control of priority and invasive weeds under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015.
A proposal supported by all constituent councils, including Uralla Shire Council, was submitted to dissolve NEWA and redistribute its functions among the member councils.
For residents within the Uralla Shire, this transition will be seamless. The same experienced biosecurity officer and sprayer who previously served under NEWA will continue their roles under the Uralla Shire Council umbrella. The only noticeable change will be the logo on their uniforms.
Annually, the biosecurity team conducts approximately 2,000 inspections to manage and control invasive weeds, ensuring compliance with biosecurity regulations and protecting the local environment. Common invasive species in the Uralla Shire include blackberries, serrated tussock, and St John’s wort, which pose significant threats to agriculture and native ecosystems.
This change exemplifies Uralla Shire Council’s commitment to enhancing services and better serving the community by taking on additional responsibilities that directly impact environmental health and agricultural productivity.
