Gwydir Shire Council will be searching for a new Mayor after John Coulton confirmed he won’t be contesting the Local Government Elections in September.
With mixed emotions, Mayor Coulton confirmed he will bring his 15-year career as Councillor and Mayor to an end this year saying it’s time to move on and allow the next generation to fill roles.
Cr Coulton says his achievements are many but singles out Council’s contribution in forming the Australian Rural Roads Group which represents rural local governments nationwide producing over $100 million in agricultural product annually.
Mayor Coulton came in at a time where there was a lack of stability at Council but believes he, General Manager Max Eastcott and Council staff worked hard to now have a prosperous organisation.
He says his biggest regret was that he wasn’t able to bring a new industry to the region but believes they’re not that far away
