Costly Losses for Saints

by | Jun 22, 2026 | Sport

The Inverell Saints have come back to earth with a thud after being defeated by the Gunnedah Bulldogs by 43 points at Wolseley Oval in Round 9 of the AFL Northwest competition.

Men’s coach Hayden Chappel says the Bulldogs got the early jump but his team showed some grit to get back into the game.

He says some turnovers hurt the team which the Bulldogs took full advantage off to claim a 14.15.99 to 7.14.56 victory but praised forward Brady Mather who was thrown into the ruck and performed impressively while newcomer Tom McKendrick worked hard in the forward line in his first game

It wasn’t a great day for the Saints with the Women also tasting defeat to the Poochettes going down by 5 points.

Women’s Coach Chris Pay says the game was tight throughout the contest but praised the girls for their efforts considering they were short on numbers.

He says several decisions didn’t go their way but it didn’t diminish their effort.

In the other game, the Tamworth Swans proved too good for the New England Nomads winning 21.4.130 to 9.10.64 while the Tamworth Swans thumped the New England Nomads by 149 points
