Accusations of Price Gouging at the Pump

by | Mar 9, 2026 | Business, Community

Fuel prices across Australia have been rising, and motoring groups are now accusing petrol retailers of price gouging.

News website MSN reports the hikes began shortly after the US-Israel conflict escalated, with some towns and cities seeing petrol prices jump up to a 25c.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury expressed frustration over these rapid price increases, adding petrol prices should have been lower at this time, but instead, they extended the high point of their cycle.

Last week Treasurer Jim Chalmers instructed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to keep an eye out for profiteering behaviour with Mr Khoury urging the ACCC to name and shame any retailers it found were profiteering.

Meantime, Northern Tablelands MP Brendan Moylan has been contacted by several independent bulk fuel suppliers who service smaller communities across regional NSW, telling him they are having huge problems with their diesel deliveries from major fuel wholesalers.

Mr Moylan says these reports from independents are incredibly concerning, with claims supply is being prioritised to big metro operators while small independent regional suppliers are left waiting, or are forced to pay through the nose, which then hits locals at the pump.
