Glen Innes Severn Council has formally taken over the responsibility for invasive / noxious weed management in the local government area, following the dissolution of the New England Weeds Authority (NEWA) last month.
The transition, effective since 16 June 2025, brings to a close more than 75 years of operation by NEWA – one of the first single-purpose county councils in NSW, established in 1947 to manage invasive and priority weeds across the New England region.
The decision to dissolve the NEWA and return biosecurity functions to member councils was jointly supported by all former constituent councils, including Glen Innes Severn Council and was approved by the NSW Minister for Local Government in February 2025.
With the dissolution, Council will now serve as the Local Control Authority (LCA) under the Biosecurity Act 2015, ensuring continued protection of our region’s natural environment, primary production areas, and community assets through proactive weed management and education.
To support the transition, an experienced Biosecurity Officer, previously employed by NEWA, has joined the Glen Innes Severn Council team to lead implementation of this work. Their appointment ensures the ongoing continuity of service and local knowledge.
Council is currently updating its website to reflect these changes and will continue to keep the community informed about weed management initiatives, responsibilities and support programs in the coming months.
Council looks forward to working closely with local landholders, community groups and stakeholders to manage and reduce the spread of invasive weeds across our region.
Acting Mayor Carol Sparks said the community can expect continuity in service, with improvements to local accountability and oversight.
“One of the former NEWA staff has joined our team, and I’m confident the transition will be seamless for local landholders.
This change allows Council to deliver weed management services more efficiently and with greater local control, ensuring better outcomes for our environment and the broader community,” Cr Sparks said.
