The Inverell Highlanders have started their season with a close, hard fought loss to Pirates at Tamworth on Saturday in Round 1 action in the Central North Rugby Competition.
After impressing in the first half, the Highlanders went into half time with a 14-5 lead but rain and errors crept in during the 2nd half with the Pirates handling the wet conditions slightly better to register a 27-15 win.
In other games, Narrabri Blue Boars got the title defence off to a winning start, defeating the Quirindi Lions 34-15 while Moree Bulls proved too strong for the Gunnedah Red Devils 45-28
