Two Dead After SUV Crashes into Creek Near Mungindi

by | Sep 16, 2024 | Crime | 0 comments

Two people have died after a SUV crashed off a road and into a creek near the NSW-Queensland border.

Emergency services were called to Carwal Creek Bridge, south of the Mungindi township, after a SUV left Morialta Road after 1.15am on Sunday 15 September, crashed down an embankment and landed in the creek becoming submerged and trapping three people.

Friends travelling in another vehicle noticed the SUV was no longer following and returned to find the crash scene.

Officers attached to New England Police District attended, alongside Police Divers, NSW Ambulance, and members of Mungindi RFS.

A 23-year-old woman was helped out of the vehicle and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

About 12pm Sunday 15 September, the bodies of a man and woman – both aged in their 20s – were recovered from the submerged vehicle.

The pair are yet to be formally identified.

Crash Investigators have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
