New Magistrates for Inverell & Moree

by | Jul 10, 2024 | Crime, Politics | 0 comments

The Moree Inverell circuit of the NSW Local Court is set to receive 2 new magistrates from October this year.

Timothy Khoo, an expert in children’s law with almost 2 decades of experience working on matters relating to children and young people, and Deputy Senior Crown Prosecutor Sean Hughes, who has across almost 30 years worked with NSW Police, Legal Aid NSW and the NSW Office of the Dept of Public Prosecutions, will transfer to the Moree/Inverell Local Court circuit in October, relieving current Magistrate Catherine Samuels.

The appointments come as mounting pressure to strengthen bail laws in youth crime came into effect earlier this year, to help prevent repeat youth crime as well as introducing new performance crime offences targeting those who advertise certain crimes on social media.

NSW Attorney General Michael Daley congratulated the new magistrates on their appointments, saying they are a welcome addition to the bench.
