Moths Swarm Towns as They Head South

by | Oct 9, 2026 | Agriculture, Community, Environment

An influx of bogong moths in NSW has certainly caught the attention of residents as they migrate in large numbers to the Victorian Alps where they enter a summer hibernation.

ABC News reports the species had dropped in population in 2017 and 2019 and was listed as endangered in 2021 but numbers have bounced back.

Caitlyn Forster from the University of Sydney says Bogongs actually use the stars to navigate, which means they are impacted by lights but can also be blown off course due to strong winds during the migration

Dr Foster says in theory the number of bogong moths for this time of year was normal, adding we just haven’t seen it for quite a while.

Experts advise if moths are in the house, gently move them outside and let the moths carry on in their journey.
