Inverell Shire Council has endorsed the Draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2027–2036 for a 28-day public exhibition period, inviting residents and stakeholders to help shape the future of waste services across the Shire.
The draft Strategy provides a practical framework for planning and delivering waste management and resource recovery services over the next decade.
It aligns with Council’s Community Strategic Plan, regional waste objectives and NSW waste management targets while allowing flexibility to respond to changing industry, regulatory and market conditions.
Council currently manages approximately 32,650 tonnes of waste each year, with about 70% generated by non-domestic sources.
The Strategy’s vision is to deliver progressive waste services focused on improved diversion from landfill through an innovative, sustainable and circular approach.
Its objectives include increasing waste diversion and resource recovery, maintaining financially sustainable services, reducing environmental impacts, planning future focused infrastructure and technologies and leveraging regional collaboration.
Delivery is organised around four focus areas; Avoiding and reducing waste. Increasing recycling and resource recovery. Providing sustainable waste operations. Building resilient, future ready waste services
Community and stakeholder feedback received during the exhibition period will help Council refine the Strategy and ensure it reflects local priorities and expectations.

Written submissions on the Draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2027-2036 will be received up until close of business on Monday, 26 October 2026.
