Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan welcomed news that BackTrack Armidale will receive a share of $700,000 in funding from the state government to deliver additional programs for young men and boys.
The funding will be shared with the Central West-based Boys to the Bush Program and used to build on already existing programs based around violence prevention and early intervention, as well as creating new opportunities.
“The team at BackTrack change lives for the better every day and this additional funding will support boys and young men to understand what healthy relationships look like, and that the prevention of domestic, family and sexual violence is a responsibility and conversation for all men and boys,” Mr Moylan said.
“The funding is a great acknowledgement of the commitment of the BackTrack team over the past two decades and builds on the programs and support already offered.
“I commend the team at BackTrack for continuing to show up for our young people by offering programs with practical skills and support to make good decisions in their lives.”
BackTrack Founder Bernie Shakeshaft welcomed the chance to build on current programs.
“Empowering young people to build healthy relationships can’t rely on one-off messaging,” Mr Shakeshaft said.
It requires trust and connection over long-term support and activities to build healthier ways of relating.
“This funding opportunity allows us to continue doing the things we know will work. Additionally, it will strengthen our capabilities in this area through specialist training for our youth workers and engagement with young people.
“We know that when young people feel safe, valued and connected, they are more likely to make great choices that benefit them and the whole community.”
