The 2026 NSW Street Count, conducted earlier this year, has revealed Inverell Shire Local Government Area has had a decrease in people sleeping rough in the last 12 months.
The Count states 32 people in the LGA were found to be sleeping rough this year as opposed to 71 in 2025, but that figure stood at 5 in 2024.
Over 370 local organisations, including Specialist Homelessness Services, local councils, Community Housing Providers, Aboriginal organisations, local community groups and NSW Police were either consulted and/or partnered with Homes NSW to complete street counts.
Inverell Shire Mayor Kate Dight says despite the decrease in homelessness in the past 12 months, this is an issue of concern for the community and Council is working hard to address the matter.
