Inverell Shire Council will use feedback from local businesses and training providers to strengthen its advocacy for improved apprenticeship and trainee support across Inverell Shire.
At its Ordinary Meeting held on 27 May 2026, Council resolved to seek input from the Inverell Chamber of Commerce on apprenticeship and trainee retention, including the reasons apprentices may not complete their training.
The Chamber subsequently sought feedback from its members, with submissions received from local employers, employment services, community training providers and vocational education representatives across sectors including manufacturing, automotive, disability services, engineering, employment services and vocational education.
The feedback provided valuable insight into the challenges facing local businesses and the practical support needed to improve apprenticeship commencement and completion rates.
Common themes raised in the feedback included the impact of rising living costs on apprentice wages, competition from higher-paying industries and metropolitan employment, travel and accommodation costs for training, limited locally delivered specialist courses, reduced employer
incentives, administrative issues and the need for stronger mentoring.
Several respondents also identified opportunities for greater collaboration between TAFE NSW, community-based training providers and employers to improve access to flexible, locally delivered training.
Mayor Kate Dight said, “The submissions make it clear that apprenticeships are vital to the future of our local workforce, but they must be supported by flexible training options, strong mentoring, and incentives which recognise the realities of regional business.”
Council thanks the Inverell Chamber of Commerce and the businesses and training representatives who contributed to this important discussion.
Council will use the information received to inform Council’s future advocacy to the State and Federal Governments on workforce development, regional training opportunities and apprenticeship support initiatives.
