Plan Identifies Fire Risk Areas

by | Jul 6, 2026 | Fire

The New England Bush Fire Management Committee has released a draft bushfire risk management plan for the New England which has detailed six areas that have an unacceptable risk.

The Northern Daily Leader reports key areas between Walcha, Guyra/Black Mountain and Yarrowitch / Kangaroo Flat would require additional targeted treatment strategies within the next five-year period of the management plan.

The report outlines how fuel levels have returned to high or extreme levels and that some areas have a single access road, limiting opportunities for evacuation should a bushfire threaten the region.

The New England Bush Fire Risk Management Plan is on public display until August 10 on the New England RFS website with the plan’s main purpose to manage fuel loads to reduce the spread of potential bushfires, increase resilience through preparedness, response and recovery within the community, and reduce the risk of human-induced bushfires and their potential to damage assets.
