Council appoints two new members to Aboriginal Consultative Committee

by | Jun 29, 2026 | Arts & Culture, Local Government, Media Release

Inverell Shire Council has appointed Preston Connors and Yoorana Delaney as community representatives on its Aboriginal Consultative Committee for a two-year term following the close of nominations.

The Aboriginal Consultative Committee was established in 2014 and includes representatives from the Ashford Local Aboriginal Land Council, the Anaiwan Local Aboriginal Land Council and community members from across the Shire.

Council resolved to appoint two community representatives for a two-year term following a request from the Committee to expand its membership due to attendance challenges.

Nominations were invited in May 2026 and closed on 29 May 2026.

Following consideration of the nominations received, Council appointed Preston Connors and Yoorana Delaney as the two additional community representatives.

It was also noted that Malcolm Talbot, as a member of the Ashford Local Aboriginal Land Council, is able to participate in the Committee through that existing representation.

The Committee plays an important role in strengthening relationships, promoting greater understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and heritage, and ensuring Aboriginal perspectives are considered in matters affecting the local community.

Mayor Kate Dight said, “The Aboriginal Consultative Committee continues to provide valuable advice and connection between Council and the community. We welcome the interest shown by community members in being part of this important work and look forward to the Committee continuing to support cultural understanding and positive outcomes for Aboriginal people across the Inverell Shire.
