Council Seeks Exemption from FOGO

by | Jun 18, 2026 | Community, Environment, Local Government

Inverell Shire Council has endorsed a motion seeking an indefinite exemption for the statewide mandate for Food Organics and Garden Organics recycling, to reduce and stop food waste going to landfill.

The NSW government mandate requires local councils to provide all NSW households who receive a residual (red lid) waste collection service with a Food Organics and Garden Organics or FOGO, waste service by 1 July 2030.

Speaking during yesterday’s Council meeting, Cr Greg Kachel says the FOGO was a complete waste of time and money to Councils and ratepayers adding this mandate would be costly to councils, especially those who are currently not financial.

Inverell Shire Mayor Kate Dight says commended Cr Kachel and Cr Jacko Ross for their work in this space and questioned how effective the recycling program will be.
