Glen Innes Seven Council Name Change Hits Obstacle

by | Mar 31, 2026 | Local Government

A motion to conduct community engagement in relation to a name change for Glen Innes Severn Council to Glen Innes Highlands Council has been voted down.

Mayor Margot Davis says the motion to endorse Council staff to progress broader community consultation on the name change was lost 4-3 which she regarded as disappointing because she wanted to gauge the community’s perspective.

In January, Mayor Davis told the Northern Daily Leader that many people in the community know the Severn mainly as a river and over the past eight years, they’ve built up the shire’s destination brand, which is the Highlands and a possible name change seemed the next, logical step.

General Manager Bernard Smith said at the time the proposed logo and name change would cost ratepayers between $15,000 and $20,000.
