Concerns Raised about BESS Proposal

by | Aug 13, 2025 | Community, Environment, Rural | 0 comments

A local landholder has raised his concerns about a proposed Inverell Battery Energy Storage System between the Gwydir Highway and Elsmore Road approximately 5.5 km east of Inverell.

Matthew Penberty believes the proposed BESS project could have found a more appropriate location that is less intrusive to local residents and addresses the risks associated with battery fires.

According to Renewable Energy developer South Energy, the aim of the project is to provide critical energy storage for all forms of energy entering the National Energy Market, while also supporting grid stability.

Mr Penberthy says he attended the recent community information sessions held by South Energy but was unsatisfied to their responses to his concerns.

He says he and his neighbours have many concerns about the proposed Battery storage system.

A community feedback survey is available on the link surveymonkey.com/r/InverellBESS and closes this Friday at 4pm.
