Council to Make Submission to Tobacco Inquiry

by | Jul 22, 2025 | Local Government | 0 comments

Inverell Shire Council is expected to make a submission to the Illegal Tobacco Trade Parliamentary Inquiry supporting tougher regulation of the sale of illegal  tobacco and ensuring that future regulatory compliance remains the primary responsibility of the state and federal governments.

In May this year, the NSW Government established a Parliamentary Inquiry  into the illegal tobacco trade in New South Wales following an explosion of tobacco stores around the state.

All retailers and wholesaler will have until October 1st to hold a valid licence to sell tobacco and non-tobacco smoking products while criminal checks will take place as part of the licensing process and the government can refuse to issue a license.

The Justice and Communities Committee conducting the Inquiry are receiving submissions up until the 1 August.
